What makes one kit worth several hundred dollars more than another? Well, it turns out there are some very important key differences between automatic transmission kits. These are a few things that you will want to look out for.
Gasket Quality
Your gaskets and seals are often the first parts to fail on a rebuilt transmission. The hard parts do not wear as fast, and gaskets tend to breakdown over time. While it may seem like a good deal to buy cheap gaskets, resist this temptation. Cheap gaskets will not last as long. In fact, some cheap gaskets will leak from day one. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra for good gaskets. Unless that is, you want your newly rebuilt transmission leaking on your driveway.
Included Parts
Certain hard parts do need to be replaced but are not always included in a rebuild kit. The biggest of these is the steel clutches. These go between the friction clutches and are used for energy transfer, just like in a manual. The problem here is that, while they do not wear out as fast, these steel plates do wear out. They can also be bent and warped over time. You may be able to get them mostly flat, but never attempt to straighten one of these. It may work fine for a while, but eventually, it will fail. Most likely, it will be sooner than later.
The other part that is usually not included in these kits is the transmission bands. These are small, rubber bands that help control the transmission. Over time they can become stiff and hard. This will lead to them cracking and eventually breaking. True, they will usually last much longer than a belt, but they still wear.
Buying a cheap rebuild kit may seem like a good way to save money, but you will likely be disappointed by the low quality and lack of parts in bargain kits.
